I am able to login to the database as system user through putty session but I am unable to login using OEM grid control. I get the below error :

Database Error

ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

I know that we get this error if the user id or the password is invalid. But if the password is invalid, how come i am able to login through putty?

OS Authentication, perhaps

I don't know what you have.
I don't know what you do.
I don't know what you see.
It is really, Really, REALLY difficult to fix a problem that can not be seen.
use COPY & PASTE so we can see what you do & how Oracle responds.

It would be helpful if you followed Posting Guidelines - http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/88153/0/

We have no proof that EM & putty are trying to connect to the same instance.

You have a mystery & we have no clues.
Oracle RDBMS is too dumb to lie.

When Oracle reports "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied", then I believe it.

Your screen shot shows you trying to login to an ASM instance, it is highly unlikely that you have set up an ASM user called system. Are you confusing RDBMS instances and ASM instances?

I understood now. The ASM instance is not running. That is why I couldn't login using sys or system user.
