Hello,

We are experiencing this bizarre and re-occuring issue that is having a severe impact on our users.

Specs:
Windows 2003 SP2
4 GB RAm ( with /3gb and /PAE switch )

oracle 9.2.0.8
Pga_target = 1gb
sga_max = 2.5gb

The problem is that nothing is produced prior in the alert.log o and no core dump is created when the database service just halts in the event viewer and DB crashes.

My question is why is it crashing this way without leaving any traces , is it memory related as per those specs?
Has anyone ever had this prob?
Oracle support is pointing to a Windows problem and if my allocated memory for Oracle would be too high, i would get mem errors in alert correct ?

I am not receiving any ora-4030 errors either and nothing external from the application.

any help would be much appreciated
thx
John

As far as I know, 32-bit Windows can only address 3GB RAM.
I suggest you reduce the memory Oracle thinks it can (ab)use
& leave some RAM for Windows, too.

You need to help us by following the Posting Guidelines as stated below.

I agree with Oracle, this is more likely a Windows problem, above all if you have any trace in Oracle files.

I am surprised Oracle is even talking to you.

oracle 9.2.0.8 was retired & obsoleted before Windows 2003 was released.

Thanks alot guys for your quick response...

I am at a lost as too what is going on with the process as it happens very random ( i.e twice a month ).

If Oracle would be choking then it would produce errors or performance would take a hit. In this case the Oracle process just dies and nothing is written in any logs ( very strange ).

So by tweaking the memory ( sga_max and pga sizes ) can I prevent this ? I do have the /3gb switch and it's supposed to reach to 3.7. Why would windows just kill the process ?

Many thanks and I apologize fr the direct question as not even Oracle support has an answer.

J

My SGA params are:

Shared Pool 320 MB
Buffer Cache 720 MB
Large Pool 256 MB
Java Pool * 24 MB
Other (MB) 19

Total SGA (MB) 1339 MB

max_SGA 2.5 GB

Would my problem be that the max_sga is reached for whatever reason and therefore the server is left with nothing. So bringing the max down to 2gb would leave more ram for the server ? is this a possibility ?

Under normal conditions, Oracle will leave droppings when bad things happen.
If what you report accurately reflects reality, then by definition you do not have normal conditions.
Without dump file, trace file, alert log entries or additional evidence, all anyone can do is speculate.

I have to ask why/how it was decided that 2.5GB SGA was needed.
It has been years since I dealt with V9, but I thought default maximum SGA size was around 1.7GB.

I'd suggest you reduce max SGA down to 1.5GB & see if crashes continue.

I just inherited this DB and just recently it has started to do weird things. Absolutely no "droppings" as you say are produced.

So I will reduce the SGA_MAX from 2.5gb to 2gb and the PGA is at 1GB ? Lower to 700 ?

Can you post what message exactly "the database service just halts in the event viewer" is?

Also, there MIGHT be some clue in with which error the client applications are crashing, if there are any.

By the way, the *only* time I had Oracle crash for me once without *any* traces once was when the RAM was physically bad. Maybe you could run MEMTEST86 on the box to be sure that's not the case.

Sorry for now being clearer... the Oracle service just stops as if it's killed by the OS Confused
The message is that "the service has stopped unexpectedly...."

The memory seems OK as per my admin.

Now is this really a memory issue ?

>>the Oracle service just stops as if it's killed by the OS

Please explain me; why it's killed by OS level

Hi gentlebabu...

That's exactly what happens, the windows OracleService for the database just stops and crashes in the event viewer.
No errors are shown in alert or any core dumps created.

I am trying to prove if my SGA and PGA are too high which is causing wndows to react this way.
I'm assuming it's the OS that is killing the process as strange as it may seem as no Oracle logs are produced.

Oracle support are pointing to the OS's fault.

thx
